Established in 1988, Pattukottai Alagiri Matriculation Higher Secondary School (HSS) in Papanasam is a prestigious educational institution managed by a private body. வேணுகோபால் பரிந்துரையின் பெயரில் கூட்டுறவான வங்கியில் எழுத்தராகச் சேர்ந்தார். அங்கு வேலை பார்த்த பார்ப்பன மேலாளருடன் ஏற்பட்ட பிணக்கினால் அப்பணியிலிருந்து விலகினார். ரிவோல்ட் என்னும் இதழின் ஆசிரியர்களாக இருந்த "பெரியார்" ஈ.வெ.இராமசாமி, இராமநாதன், குத்தூசி குருசாமி ஆகியோர்களில் குத்தூசி குருசாமியை ஒரு நாளேடு தரக்குறைவாக எழுதியது. இதனால் கோபமடைந்த அழகிரி அந்த நாளேட்டின் அலுவலகம் சென்று அந்த ஆசிரியரை அடித்துவிட்டு திரும்பினார்.
அழகிரிதான் முதன் முதலில் பட்டுக்கோட்டையில் சுயமரியாதை சங்கம் தொடங்கி உறுப்பினர் சேர்த்து சுயமரியாதை பிரச்சாரம் செய்தார். அதன் பிறகே பெரியாரால் சுயமரியாதை இயக்கம் தொடங்கப்பட்டது. தமிழ்நாட்டில் இந்தி திணிக்கப்பட்ட போது, 1 ஆகத்து 1938 அன்று மூவலூர் இராமாமிர்தம் அம்மையார் உள்ளிட்டோருடன் சேர்ந்து திருச்சிராப்பள்ளி மாவட்டம் உறையூர் தொடங்கி மதராசு வரை நடைப்பயண இந்தி எதிர்ப்புப் பரப்புரை செய்தார்.
திருவாரூரில் சுயமரியாதை கூட்டத்தில் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்த போது, காசநோயின் தாக்கம் மயங்கி கீழே விழுந்தார். பேச்சைக் கேட்ட கூட்டம் ஓடி போய் தூக்கியது. தூக்கிய கூட்டத்தில் ஒரு சிறுவனும் உண்டு. அந்தச் சிறுவன், "காசநோயாளியான நீங்க ஆவேசமாகப் பேசலாமா?" என்று கேட்டபோது, "என்னை விட இந்த நாடு நோயாளியாக உள்ளது; முதலில் அதைச் சரிப்படுத்தத்தான் பேசுகிறேன்" என்று பதில் சொன்னார். அந்தச் சிறுவன்தான் மு. கருணாநிதி.
பட்டுக்கோட்டை அழகிரி, காசநோயின் தாக்கத்தால் 28 மார்ச் 1949 அன்று பிற்பகல் 2 மணியளவில், தனது 49-ஆம் அகவையில் காலமானார்.
அவர் மறைவுக்கு, விடுதலை இதழில் பெரியார் இரங்கல் தெரிவித்தார்: "நண்பர் அழகிரிசாமி முடிவு எய்தியது பற்றி நான் மிகவும் துக்கப்படுகிறேன். அழகிரிசாமி எனக்கு 30 ஆண்டு நண்பரும் என்னை மனப்பூர்வமாய் நிபந்தனை இல்லாமல் பின்பற்றிவருகிற ஒருவரும். இந்த 30 ஆண்டில் எவ்வித ஆலோசனையும், கொள்கை வேற்றுமையும் இருந்ததில்லை. அவர் இயக்கத்திற்கு மிகுந்த தொண்டு செய்தார்."
மு. கருணாநிதி தனது மகனுக்கு 'அழகிரி' என்று பெயர் சூட்டினார். ம. கோ. இராமச்சந்திரன் தன் சொந்த செலவில் அழகிரியின் சிலையைப் பட்டுக்கோட்டையில் நிறுவினார் மற்றும் பட்டுக்கோட்டை அழகிரி போக்குவரத்து கழகத்தையும் தொடங்கினார்.
